Top tips for Green Fingers!
Start small
You don’t have to have a garden to enjoying plants, it just as satisfying tending to a window box and watching things grow. If you do have a garden start gradually, concentrate on getting the area around the house finished first. Not only will this give you an area that you can enjoy relatively quickly but it also means you can budget for the entire garden.
Buy some quick growing plants
Plants take time to grow and whether you have grown from seed or cuttings a garden full of tiny new plants can be less fulfilling – to add a bit of substance choose plants which grow fast to give you a great show in your first season, talk to your garden centre or green fingered friends.
Stay British wherever possible
Native plants are often easier for new gardeners as they adapted over the years to most climatic and soil changes, they are generally much cheaper too.
Grow your own
Fruit & Vegetables can be extremely rewarding and also offers you a chance to understand how plants grow and what they need to survive. Picking and eating your own produce gives you a huge sense of achievement and fresh picked food always tastes great.
Get local advice
Your local garden centre can give you lots of ideas and are great source of knowledge. It is important to use this knowledge and ask staff for help with certain plants and suitability. Don’t be tempted to over buy, remember what you need and stick to it.
Enjoy it
Pottering in your garden is rewarding and great for your health. Blow away the cobwebs in the breeze. Encourage your children to help you to get them to understand how things grow.
